Like what you see? US Wars, Climate Change & the EconomyAt a panel discussion on Sept. 23, 2014, speakers addressed issues related to the ongoing US wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and, as of the previous day, Syria. Jenka Soderberg of KBOO-FM's news department led off the panel by talking about connections between the wars and climate change, and the importance of movement building. Amin Wahab, an Afghan American who'd spent 13 months working on water projects in his native country, talked about ways the US presence affected people's lives. Ian LaVallee, an Iraq War Veteran, talked about his personal experiences and encouraged people to get involved and speak their minds. Maya Rotem, an Israeli-American Jew, spoke passionately about ways to oppose Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, and how America supports that injustice. Robin Hahnel, a radical economist and former professor at Portland State University, talked about the connection between the economy and empire. And Lenny Dee, founder of 350 Oregon, an environmental network combating climate change, talked about how changing habits around energy consumption could end the policies driving the US wars. The event was a forum hosted by Peace and Justice Works Iraq Affinity Group at the Multnomah Friends Meeting House titled "US Foreign Policy: The Wars Continue."
